WhatsApp group updates — WhatsApp’s late-October 2026 update added permanent pins, recent history sharing and group-only Status, joining member tags and event reminders from January 2026. Together they help groups keep key messages visible, catch new members up, share updates with one group only, show who does what, and remind members about events. Rollout is gradual on Android and iOS. SocietiesLink is an independent directory and is not connected to WhatsApp.
1. Permanent Pins — Keep a Message at the Top for as Long as You Need
Until now, pinning a message meant choosing a time limit: 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. When the time ran out, the pin disappeared and the message sank back into the chat. WhatsApp’s late-October 2026 update adds a permanent option: pin a message with no expiry and it stays at the top until someone unpins it. To pin a message permanently, open the group, long-press the message, tap Pin, and choose the permanent option instead of a time limit. It is useful for group rules, a meeting venue, payment details or a deadline — anything members ask about again and again. Admins decide who can pin in a group, so if the option is missing, check with an admin. A permanent pin still needs looking after: if the details change, unpin the old message and pin the new one.
2. Share Recent History — Catch a New Member Up After They Join
New members normally see only the messages sent after they joined. WhatsApp added Group Message History in February 2026: when someone is added, an admin or member can choose to send them recent messages — from 25 up to 100 — plus the group’s pinned messages, so they can catch up without screenshots. What is new now is that you can do it after the person has already joined. Tap the member’s name in the group chat and choose to share recent history. This also works for people who joined through an invite link. Sharing is optional, never automatic. The shared messages stay end-to-end encrypted, the new member is notified, and the group sees a message saying history was shared. Admins can switch off members’ ability to send history while keeping it for themselves.
3. Group Status — Share an Update With One Group Only
Group Status is a Status update that only members of one chosen group can see. Post a photo or update for your family group, work team or sports club without it reaching your wider contacts. Every member can view it, react to it and add their own. Like ordinary Status updates, it disappears after 24 hours.
4. Member Tags — Show Who Does What in Each Group
Member tags arrived in January 2026. They let you add a short label to yourself in each group, so people can see your role at a glance — “Treasurer” in a volunteer group, “Sam’s Dad” in a parents’ group, “Goalkeeper” in a football chat. The tag is set per group, so the same person can have a different label in each group. It helps most in large groups where not everyone knows each other.
5. Event Reminders — Remind Members Before a Group Event
Event reminders also arrived in January 2026. When you create an event in a group chat, you can now set custom reminders for the people invited, so they get a nudge before it starts. The reminders stay linked to the event, which makes it easier to plan birthdays, meetings, matches and calls without anyone forgetting.
When Will You Get These Features?
WhatsApp is rolling the features out gradually on Android and iOS, and it has not published a date for when every account will have them. If you do not see a feature yet, update WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or App Store and check again later. There is no setting to switch these on yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a WhatsApp message stay pinned now?
As long as you like. Choose the permanent option when pinning and it stays at the top until someone unpins it. The old limits were 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.
Can a new member see old group messages?
Not automatically. Someone has to share recent history with them — 25 to 100 recent messages plus pinned messages — either when they are added or later by tapping their name in the chat.
How long does a Group Status last?
24 hours, like an ordinary Status, and only members of that group can see it.
These five updates all do the same job: they make busy WhatsApp groups easier to follow. Important messages stay visible, new members catch up faster, updates reach only the people they are for, roles are clear, and events are not forgotten. If you run a group, try the permanent pin first: it is the one change that saves the most repeated questions.
